4:54 pm - Christmas spirit - ack !
Well, I've got my shopping done, helped my mother finish hers, wrapped the gifts that are already here, made Oatmeal Scotchies, plus a cookie using a dark chocolate fudge cake mix w/peanut butter morsels, and now something called Nutella Peanut Butter bars. And it's not even the 20th.
Need to stop making sugary stuff. Do not need.

Of course, I have been on vacation.

=)

9:35 am - My first earthquake
Thanks to a 5.6 earthquake in central Oklahoma that happened while I was awake, about 157 miles from where I live in Kansas. There have been several in that area in the last two days, but have been smaller or I've slept through them, thanks to work tiring me out.

It was an interesting experience.

9:27 pm - Major causes of Postal Service woes - the Congress of 2006...
...and the current Congress's foot-dragging on the pre-funding issue.

This has nothing to do with taxpayer money or bailouts, inefficiency or the internet - the money involved in pre-funding is revenue earned by the USPS which should have been reinvested BY the USPS in improvements, but instead has been tied up by Congress for the last 4 years.

I know I couldn't prepay 75 years worth of, say, utility bills, in only 10 years without going into debt.

And just a reminder - the USPS is NOT supported in any way by taxes.

5:30 pm - Dear intermittent Stalker-Kun
Would you PLEASE catch a clue ? I've been ignoring/refusing your occasional communications for over 20 years ! At K University, we were at best, acquaintances through the SF club. Why me of all people ?

Quit calling my family.
Quit sending letters.
Quit trying to get info about me through other sources.
If I ever see you near my house, I WILL call the police. Maybe that'd work.

Sorry, I just have to rant, even though I know he won't see this.

This post inspired by getting an email from my church's secretary telling me he tried to get contact info from her.

Not particularly afraid, but PO'd

10:06 pm - bleh
Well I got an early start on my vacation, which really should have started as of 4 PM today.

I'm not very grateful, because it's thanks to strep throat, which I haven't had in probably over 30 years - it never occurred to me. I had worked Thursday despite the sore throat and mild headache, thinking I had managed to acquire a cold. This despite daily temperatures usually 100+++.

Fortunately, I felt so bad Friday, I called in sick (I worry too much about things like "they might think I'm wussing out because of the weather, etc.") and then sat by my phone waiting for the minute Dr G's office opened. She got me in, scraped my throat(owwww!), and quickly told me I had strep. I had her write me a note for work, just in case, and went ahead and called in sick for Sat. too.

I've secluded myself from everyone the last 2 days, especially my mother, because of still being contagious.

I still feel pretty crappy, but at least it wasn't aggravated by 6 or 7 hours walking in 105 degree weather (heat index 110ish)

10:21 pm - Damn it
So my mother is the oldest of 5 sisters - sometimes she was like a mother to the 2 youngest since there was quite a few years between her and them, and sometimes Grandma wasn't up to caring for them.

In January, the second sister (Aunt N) was diagnosed with brain tumors. She was gone in a month. She and my mother were very very close.

Now the fourth sister (Aunt B) has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Which is not good, but potentially far more treatable than Aunt N's cancer. She'll be having all sorts of appointments and scans to determine extent and treatment. My cousin said that the doctor sounded positive and that Aunt B is in good spirits.

But my poor mother - Aunt N has only been gone for 4 months and now she's worrying about Aunt B.

7:23 pm - Tatsumaki warning !
The tornado sirens went off as I got home a couple minutes ago. Oooh, TV is showing wall cloud about 10 miles west of me - kind of close to my mother's house. Hail too.

Interesting unusual weather phenomenon VERY early this morning. I quote a reporter to make it easier (for me): "A heat burst shortly after midnight sent the temperature skyrocketing in Wichita early today, weather officials say.

“We went from 85 to 102 in 20 minutes,” said Stephanie Dunten, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wichita.

The surge in temperatures began at 12:22 a.m. when a pocket of air in the upper atmosphere collapsed to the surface, Dunten said. That sent winds of more than 50 miles an hour through portions of the city as the air hit the ground and spread out.

In a heat burst, rain falling from higher elevations cools air beneath it as it evaporates. The cooler air then descends rapidly to the surface, and as the air falls it is compressed and warms dramatically."

I saw lots of tree limbs down today =(

5:17 pm - Thank you, Providence...
...in the person of one of my favorite chatty customers. Despite the hot weather, he had rolled himself out on his porch to wait for me to come by with his mail. So instead of delivering his mail and heading back to my truck, I stopped to talk - which saved me from being pancaked by a large limb from an old elm. We had just started chatting when we heard a god-awful cracking noise and looked just in time to see it hit the ground where I cross the street.

So thank you. Especially after I remembered a carrier in Missouri was killed by a tree limb just last year, and that sunhat I wear ain't no hard hat.

5:30 pm - Ask not for whom the bell tolls...
My unfinished TP titles

Beck, DNAngel, Dazzle, Demon Sacred, Dragon Voice, Genjuu no Seiza, Initial D, Lagoon Engine, Loveless, Maid-sama !, Monochrome Factor, PeaceMaker, Silver Diamond, V.B. Rose...

Some of these titles TokyoPop had left dangling some time ago, some are victims of the impending closure.
Arg !

V.B. Rose is the SECOND Hidaka Banri title I collected that a publisher has left unfinished - the other was "I Hate You More Than Anyone" from CMX. Anyone remember them ? At least they managed to finished "Tears of a Lamb" by Hidaka before DC closed them up.

Sigh.

11:11 pm - Vacation, come baaaack !
Vacation, where you go, back to work on Monday, don't feel rested yet <>_<>

Almost over, did a whole lot of stuff, but none of things on my list of maybe-dos. But more importantly, I helped my mother get most of her Xmas stuff done which makes me feel good. And I did get some of my Xmas taken care of as well.

Ah, I'm getting the 50-60 year old windows that still remain in my house replaced 12/22 ! The previous owners had replaced some windows where they had done renos, but I'm finally taking care of the others =)

2:13 pm - I has working plumbing
I'm very happy - "The Butler" got here within 2 hours of me calling, fixed my shower (and a couple other minor things I had put off) and did not charge me an arm & a leg !!

I will remember that and call them again in the future =)

4:57 am - why am i up at this time of morning ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
because I get up 3:30 ish to go to the bathroom & hear the shower dripping. I reach in and turn the handle ON/OFF, thinking that's weird, it wasn't doing that when I went to bed. And the water speeds up until the shower is running almost full on. Hot water at that. I try to find local shut off valve for shower, no luck. Walk around house w/flashlight - no luck. Finally peer into muddy crawlspace with spider webs - spot red handle as described online. Find EXTREMELY old oversized pair of jeans, crawl in and successfully turn water off. yay.

Call plumber later. After I meet the internet/cable guy at my mother's house at 8. She hasn't had the internet since Tuesday.

Now for a couple hours sleep before I get up. Again. What a "lovely" start to my day off. Though I guess I am grateful I'm not working after losing more than an hour of sleep in the middle of the night.

2:03 pm - vacationing !
Ah, it was so nice to wake up, look at the clock, and roll over because I'm on vacation til Tuesday, August 3rd!

One Objective already achieved - signed up for the local recycling program.

Next make doctor's appointment - it's been 6 months and she wants to check stuff before doing prescription refills. Oh well.

Now it's time for a leisurely lunch instead of my usual half hour.

*happy sigh*

9:20 pm - Thank you to all who donated.
I picked up a whole lotta of food, even though the neighborhood I deliver to isn't the most prosperous one in the world. Lots of generous people !

Below is the beginning of the NALC press release, plus a link to it in its entirety.

THANKS !!!!

Beginning of Press Release;

"Americans donated a record 77.1 million pounds of non-perishable food to help "Stamp Out Hunger" in their communities this year in the annual Letter Carriers National Food Drive, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) union announced today.

NALC President Fredric V. Rolando said 77,132,180 pounds of food were collected in the drive and delivered to local food banks, pantries and shelters to help needy families. It is the nation’s largest one-day effort to combat hunger. The results of the May 8 effort easily eclipsed the previous record, set last year, of 73.4 million pounds.

The 18th annual drive boosted the total donations collected since the drive began in 1993 to more than 1 billion pounds -- 1,059,800,000 pounds."
